Yoga In The West
Yoga in the West is mostly associated with flexibility and strength but it is much more than the physical body. Yoga is the union of mind, body and soul without discrimination. Though Yoga isn’t a religion, it is a spiritual path that can help you find inner peace, and can be practiced in conjunction with other religions. Its Vedic roots extend to all who are searching for a path of righteousness, Truth, and spiritual growth.
Aside from keeping the body fit, we must balance the mind to find the essence of our true nature. It can be difficult to follow your true self when the modern world is telling you to be another. Beauty is defined by magazines and success by money, and until we perceive these as illusions, we cannot see the Truth. Meditation is a key role in discovering the ‘Self’. Your Identity. Your Truth.
The concept of sitting still, closing my eyes, and taking deep breaths while focusing on what lies within was foreign to me until I sat, closed my eyes and took deep breaths. At first, it was hard. I could barely sit still for two minutes before boggling thoughts attacked my mind. Some of those thoughts tried convincing me that I was crazy, others whispered it was a waste of time, but after a few days of discipline (Tapas), the body spoke Truth.
Meditation can not change your situation, however, it can teach you to quiet the mind and find peace in the midst of a storm. It clears out the clutter and allows clarity to steer the wheel of life. It teaches us to rely on our intuition to discern our choices, thus, take risks we normally shy away from.
